How to Clean Your AC Filter at Home (And When to Call a Professional)
Here's one of the simplest things you can do to keep your AC running efficiently between professional services: clean your own filter every couple of months. It takes about ten minutes, costs nothing, and makes a real difference to your air quality and energy bills.
Why Filter Cleaning Matters
Your AC filter's job is to catch dust, pollen, hair, and other particles before they enter the unit. Over time, it gets clogged — and a clogged filter means:
Reduced airflow, so your room takes longer to cool
Your AC working harder, which increases electricity use
Dust and allergens being recirculated into your home instead of trapped
The good news: cleaning it yourself is quick and simple.
How to Clean Your Filter — Step by Step
1. Turn off the unit Always switch off your AC before opening it, for safety.
2. Open the front panel Most units have a front panel that lifts or flips open by hand — no tools needed. The filter sits just behind it.
3. Remove the filter Gently slide or lift it out. It's usually a light mesh panel, so handle it carefully to avoid tearing.
4. Wash it with lukewarm soapy water Use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap or washing-up liquid. Gently swish and rinse the filter — you can use a soft brush or your fingers to loosen any stuck-on dust. Avoid hot water and harsh chemicals, as these can damage the mesh.
5. Let it dry completely This step matters more than people think. Shake off the excess water and leave the filter to air dry fully — ideally somewhere shaded, not in direct sun, which can warp the material. Never put it back in the unit while still damp, as this can encourage mould growth inside your AC.
6. Put it back in place Once completely dry, slide the filter back into position and close the front panel.
How Often Should You Do This?
For most homes on the Costa Blanca, cleaning the filter every 2–3 months is a good rule of thumb — more often if you run the AC constantly through summer, have pets, or live somewhere dusty.
