Setting Your AC to 18°C Won't Cool the Room Any Faster
It's a very common habit: you walk into a hot room, grab the remote, and set the AC straight to 18°C — thinking it'll blast cold air and cool the room down faster. It's an understandable instinct, but it doesn't actually work that way, and it can cause a few problems of its own.
Your AC Doesn't "Blow Harder" at a Lower Temperature
Here's the key thing to understand: the temperature you set is a target, not a speed control. Your AC unit blows air at essentially the same cold temperature whether you set it to 27°C or 18°C. The only difference is how long it keeps running before it reaches — and then maintains — that target temperature.
So if your room is at 30°C and you set the AC to 27°C, it will blow exactly the same cold air as if you'd set it to 18°C. The unit doesn't work "harder" or "colder" at a lower setting — it simply keeps running for longer, because it has a lower target to reach.
The Real Risk: Forgetting to Turn It Back Up
The common problem is this: you set it to 18°C intending to turn it up later once the room feels comfortable — and then you forget. The AC keeps running, and running, chasing a target that's far colder than you actually need, until your room ends up freezing at 18°C instead of a comfortable 24–25°C.
This leads to a few issues:
Overcooling — a room that's uncomfortably cold, especially noticeable if you're sitting still, sleeping, or have children or elderly family members in the house
Wasted energy — the unit runs longer than necessary to reach an unnecessarily low temperature
Increased condensation risk — a much colder unit and colder surfaces increase the chance of condensation build-up, which can contribute to dripping or water pooling around the indoor unit
Health discomfort — very cold indoor air, especially with a big contrast to the outdoor heat, can cause stiffness, sore throats, headaches, or general discomfort, particularly with prolonged exposure
A Better Approach: Set It to Where You Actually Want It
Instead of setting an extreme low temperature "to cool faster," set the AC directly to the temperature you actually want the room to reach — typically 24–26°C is a comfortable, efficient range for most homes in our climate.
If you prefer, you can also lower it gradually in a couple of steps rather than jumping straight to an extreme setting. Either way, the room will cool down at the same underlying pace — the airflow temperature doesn't change, only the point at which the unit decides "job done" and eases off.
