Not All AC Installations Are the Same: Why the Small Details Matter

When you're getting a new air conditioning system installed, it's easy to assume that an installation is an installation — the unit goes up, the pipes get connected, and cold air comes out. But there's a big difference between an installation done quickly to get through as many jobs as possible in a day, and one done properly, with attention to the details that actually matter long-term. Here are two examples that show exactly what separates a rushed job from a professional one.

Unprotected Pipe Insulation: A Problem You Won't See Coming

Every AC system has copper pipework (the "line set") running between the indoor and outdoor units, wrapped in foam insulation. That insulation has one job: keep the refrigerant at the right temperature as it travels between units, so heat exchange happens where it's supposed to — inside your room, not outside on the wall.

Here's the part that gets skipped in a rushed installation: that foam insulation needs to be protected from UV exposure wherever it runs outdoors — along an exterior wall, up to the outdoor unit, or across a terrace. Standard pipe insulation isn't UV-resistant. Left exposed to direct sunlight, it degrades, cracks, and breaks down over time.

Why This Matters More Than It Seems

Once the insulation breaks down from sun exposure, the pipework is no longer properly insulated. Heat exchange starts happening in the wrong place — out on the exposed pipework, instead of at the indoor unit where it belongs. The practical results:

  • Reduced cooling performance — the system has to work harder to deliver the same effect indoors

  • Higher electricity bills — a system compensating for heat loss along the pipes consumes more energy to hit the same target temperature

  • Faster wear on the compressor — from the extra strain of constantly compensating

None of this shows up on day one. It shows up a year or two later, as a system that "used to be fine" but now runs longer, costs more, and cools less — and by then, most people assume the unit itself is failing, when the real issue is unprotected pipe insulation slowly degrading in the sun.


The Fix Is Simple — If It's Not Skipped

Properly protecting exposed pipe insulation (with UV-resistant wrapping, conduit, or trunking) takes extra time during installation. It's a small, inexpensive step — but it's exactly the kind of detail that gets left out when speed is prioritized over quality.

Cable Ferrules: A Small Part With a Big Job

The second detail is inside the electrical connections. When wiring an AC unit, the ends of the electrical cables need to be properly terminated before connecting to the terminal block. This is where ferrules — small metal sleeves crimped onto the end of stripped wire — come in.

Why Skipping Ferrules Is a Problem

Without a ferrule, stranded wire pressed directly into a terminal screw tends to fray, spread, and compress unevenly over time. This leads to:

  • A loose or unstable electrical connection as the connection settles and vibration works the strands looser

  • Increased resistance at the connection point, which generates unnecessary heat

  • A higher risk of electrical faults — and in the worst cases, a fire risk — from an unstable, overheating connection

A ferrule ensures the stripped wire ends are neatly bundled, fully protected, and make a solid, even, lasting contact with the terminal. It's a small part, and it takes a minute or two longer per connection to fit properly — but it's the difference between a connection that stays safe and reliable for years, and one that slowly degrades.

Why These Details Get Skipped

Both of these — UV-protected insulation and properly ferruled cable ends — take extra time. Neither one is visible once the installation is finished and the covers are back on. Nobody standing in the room can tell, just by looking, whether these steps were done properly.

That's exactly the problem: a rushed installation and a professional installation can look identical on the day the job finishes. The difference only shows up later — in higher bills, reduced performance, or in the worst case, an electrical fault — long after the installer has moved on to the next job.

What This Means for You

When you're comparing quotes for an AC installation, the cheapest or fastest option isn't always doing the same job as a more thorough one, even if the unit itself is identical. The visible parts — the indoor unit, the outdoor unit, the brand — are the same either way. It's the details you can't see once it's finished that determine whether the system performs properly for the next ten years, or starts underperforming within twelve months.
