Why Topping Up Your AC's Refrigerant Every Year Isn't Normal — And What You Should Do Instead
If your air conditioning technician keeps "topping up the gas" every year or two, that's not routine maintenance — it's a warning sign. A correctly installed, well-functioning AC system should not lose refrigerant over time. If it's running low, gas is leaking out somewhere, and refilling it without finding and fixing the leak is only a temporary — and costly — fix.
Refrigerant Doesn't "Run Out" — It Leaks Out
Unlike fuel or oil, refrigerant isn't consumed by
the system during normal operation. It circulates
in a sealed loop between the indoor and outdoor
units, changing from liquid to gas and back again
to move heat. If the level is low, there's only one
explanation: the system has a leak.
Common leak points include:
Corroded or damaged copper pipework
(often from age or coastal salt air)
Poor-quality flare joints or connections
made during installation
Damaged valves or Schrader valves
Corrosion in the evaporator or condenser coil itself
Vibration damage where pipework rubs against a wall or bracket over time
Why "Just Refilling It" Is a Bad Habit
Recharging a leaking system without repairing the leak first causes several problems:
1. It Doesn't Actually Fix Anything
The refrigerant will simply leak out again — often within months. You end up paying for a repeat service call and more gas, again and again, without ever solving the underlying issue.
2. It's Bad for the Environment
Most refrigerants used in modern AC systems (like R32 or R410A) are potent greenhouse gases when released into the atmosphere. Repeated refills mean repeated leaks — and repeated environmental damage. Under EU F-Gas Regulations, technicians are required to detect and repair leaks rather than simply top up systems, precisely because of this impact.
3. It's Not Cost-Effective
Every refill costs money — for the gas itself and the labour to add it. Over two or three years, the cumulative cost of repeated top-ups often exceeds what a proper leak repair would have cost in the first place. You're paying again and again for a problem that was never actually solved.
4. It Damages the System Over Time
Running an AC unit with low refrigerant forces the compressor to work harder than it should, increasing wear and raising the risk of a much more expensive compressor failure down the line.
What Should Happen Instead
A proper refrigerant leak repair involves:
Leak detection — using electronic leak detectors, UV dye, or nitrogen pressure testing to pinpoint exactly where the system is losing gas
Repairing the actual leak point — whether that's a joint, a valve, or a section of damaged pipework
Vacuuming the system — removing air and moisture from the lines before recharging
Recharging with the correct type and amount of refrigerant — to the manufacturer's exact specification
Verifying the fix — checking pressures and performance to confirm the system is holding refrigerant properly
This is more involved — and yes, more expensive upfront — than simply refilling the gas. But it's a one-time fix instead of a recurring bill, and it's the only approach that actually solves the problem.
The Bottom Line
If you've been refilling your AC's refrigerant every year or every couple of years, that's not bad luck — it's a leak that hasn't been properly diagnosed and repaired. It's not normal, it's not good for the environment, and it's not saving you money in the long run.
A well-maintained, leak-free AC system should hold its refrigerant charge for years, not months.
