Cheapest Way to Heat Your Home With Electricity? Why Air Conditioning Beats Radiators on the Costa Blanca

Heating with electricity in Guardamar, Torrevieja or Rojales? Learn why a split air conditioner (heat pump) uses up to 4 times less electricity than radiators, and what it means for your winter bills.

The Cheapest Way to Heat Your Home With Electricity (It's Probably Already on Your Wall)

Winters on the Costa Blanca are mild, but anyone who has sat in a tiled villa on a damp January evening knows that "mild" doesn't mean "warm". If your home runs on electricity, the question isn't whether to heat. It's how to heat without a shocking electricity bill.

Most people reach for the same things: an oil-filled radiator, a plug-in convector heater, an infrared panel. They're cheap to buy, easy to plug in, and they work. But there's a much cheaper way to turn electricity into warmth, and a lot of homeowners already own it without realising: the air conditioner.

Your Air Conditioner Is Also a Heater

Most modern split air conditioners are reversible heat pumps. In summer they move heat out of your home. In winter they run in reverse, taking heat from the outside air and moving it indoors. That's what the "heat" setting on your remote does (the little sun symbol).

This is the key point, and it's why air conditioning is the most economical way to heat with electricity:

A radiator creates heat. An air conditioner moves heat.

Creating heat from electricity takes a lot of energy. Moving heat that already exists in the outside air takes far less.

COP Explained: The Number That Decides Your Bill

The efficiency of any heating device is measured by its COP (Coefficient of Performance): how many units of heat you get for each unit of electricity you pay for.

A radiator, however nice it looks or however much it costs, can never give you more than 1 kWh of heat per 1 kWh of electricity. A modern inverter air conditioner commonly delivers three to four times that.

What Does That Mean in Euros?

Let's use a simple example. These figures are for illustration only, so plug in your own electricity price from your latest bill.

Say you need 1,000 kWh of heat over the winter months in one room, and your electricity costs €0.20 per kWh:

  • Electric radiator (COP 1): 1,000 kWh of electricity, so about €200

  • Split air conditioner (COP 4): 250 kWh of electricity, so about €50

Same warm room, same comfort, roughly a quarter of the cost. And that's for one room. If you heat several rooms through a long, damp winter, the difference over a season adds up quickly.

Why the Costa Blanca Is Ideal for Heat Pump Heating

Heat pumps work best when the outside air isn't extremely cold, because there's more heat available to move indoors. That's exactly the climate we have in Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, La Mata, Quesada and the surrounding area:

  • Winter temperatures rarely drop to freezing, so the unit runs efficiently almost all season

  • Plenty of winter sunshine keeps outdoor temperatures comfortable for the unit

  • In colder climates, heat pump efficiency can drop sharply on very cold days. Here, it stays high

For this part of Spain, an air conditioner used for heating is hard to beat.

One Unit, Year-Round Comfort

Another big advantage: you don't need two systems. The same unit that keeps you cool in July and August keeps you warm in December and January. No extra radiators to buy, store, or trip over, and no extra devices to maintain.

Tips to Get the Lowest Possible Heating Bill

A few simple habits make a real difference:

  1. Choose an inverter model. Inverter units adjust their output instead of switching on and off, which is much more efficient.

  2. Don't set the temperature too high. Around 20 to 21°C is comfortable for most people. Every extra degree increases consumption.

  3. Clean the filters regularly. Dirty filters restrict airflow and make the unit work harder.

  4. Get the size right. An undersized unit struggles; an oversized one wastes energy. A proper survey beats guessing.

  5. Use it in the rooms you actually use. Heating one room properly is cheaper than half-heating the whole house.

  6. Keep doors and windows closed while heating.

  7. Have it serviced. A clean, correctly charged system performs at its rated efficiency.

Is There a Catch?

To be fair, there are a few things worth knowing:

  • The upfront cost is higher than buying a plug-in heater. But because the running costs are so much lower, the difference is typically recovered over time, especially if you use it for both heating and cooling.

  • Efficiency varies by model. A well-chosen, properly installed unit performs far better than a cheap, poorly fitted one. Installation quality really matters.

  • On the very coldest days, efficiency drops somewhat, though on the Costa Blanca this is rarely a problem.

The Bottom Line

If you heat with electricity, an air conditioner running in heat mode is by far the most economical option, using roughly a third to a quarter of the electricity of a radiator or panel for the same amount of heat. If you already have one installed, use it. If you're thinking about buying portable electric heaters this winter, it's worth getting a quote for a proper split unit first.

That's the kind of honest advice I give on every job. I'm a one-person business, I do the work myself, and my name is on every installation. I don't recommend what's most expensive, I recommend what makes sense for your home. And as always, I don't disappear after payment.
